Pia Johnson

Pia Johnson is a Melbourne based visual artist working with photography, installation and light. Her artistic practice seeks to investigate issues arising from her cultural heritage – issues clustered around ideas of diaspora, race and identity, family and Chinese-ness.

Her recent show Who’s the Chinese lady that picks you up from school? at fortyfivedownstairs in April 2009, received a grant for from the City of Melbourne Young Artist Program; and subsequently, the work was purchased for private collection, and then for public collection by the National Gallery of Victoria. In 2010 Pia was also exhibited in group exhibitions China Obscura, Asia Now Melbourne International Fine Art (MiFA) and Love Loss and Intimacy NGV International. Other solo exhibitions include threads (2009) at Guildford Lane Gallery and thus-gone (2008) at Victoria Park Gallery. Pia is represented by Melbourne International Fine Art gallery in Collins St Melbourne.

Pia has completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts) and Diploma of Modern Languages (Mandarin) at the University of Melbourne.
