Mei-fen Kuo's interest in Chinese diasporic networks, identities and nationalism was sparked by her personal experiences in Taiwan. In her Master of Arts studies in Taiwan, in the discipline of history, she concentrated on Irish nationalism from the late 19th centre to early 20th centuries, and grounded her historical understanding in the comparative politics of diasporic nationalism. For her doctoral study, she was awarded a scholarship to study in Australia on the subject of Chinese-Australian diasporic identities. Her PhD also led her to consider reframing the problem of political identity from one of nationalism, in the broad sense, to one of specific social networks and patterns of social mobilisation. Mei-fen completed her PhD in Asian Studies at La Trobe University, and she has now been selected to be a 2009 Endeavour Research Fellow.
The AASRN is a formal network for academic, community and other institutional groups who research in the area of Asian Australian Studies.
