Kien received his Diploma in Political Science at the Free University Berlin in 1999 and was supported by a dissertational research fellowship of the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Recently, he completed a Ph.D. thesis "In the Mix. Postkoloniale Streifzüge durch die Kulturgeschichte der Hybridität" at the University of Bremen. He is currently a visiting scholar at the Asia/Pacific/America-Institute of the New York University conducting research for his habilitation thesis “Can You Translate It? The Question of Knowledge Transfer between Anglophone Asian Diasporic Studies and Asian German Studies”. Afterwards he will continue to work on this project as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Graduate Programme For Transcultural Studies at the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context. Shifting Asymetries in Cultural Flows" of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. His field of research includes Postcolonial Studies, Migration, Racism, Cultural Studies and Asian Diasporic Studies. In the last years much of his writing focused on questions of cultural hybridity, identity politics, colonial presences and Asian German Studies.
The AASRN is a formal network for academic, community and other institutional groups who research in the area of Asian Australian Studies.
