Hongwei Bao

Hongwei Bao is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies, The University of Sydney, Australia. He also lectures and tutors part-time in the Department of Chinese Studies and Asian Studies Program, The University of Sydney. He is now working on a research project on queer identities and communities in contemporary China, which is provisionally titled Queer Comrades: Postsocialist State, Queer Desires, Power and Pleasure in China. Hongwei’s recent publications include ‘Haunted “Chinese Gay Identities”: Space, Time and Politics of Memory in A Story in Beijing’ (published in the conference proceedings of the Second International Conference on Sexuality in China, Renmin University of China, Beijing, 2010) and ‘LGBT Issues in China’ (in Chuck Steward ed. The Greenwood Encyclopedia of LGBT Issues Worldwide. vol. 1. Santa Barbara, CA: ABC CLIO, 2010) Hongwei’s academic interests include gender and sexuality in Asia, Asian diaspora studies, modern Chinese history and historiography, media and cultural studies, urban and cultural geography, feminism and queer theory, and postcolonial studies.
