Dennis Haskell

Dennis Haskell is Professor of English & Cultural Studies at the University of Western Australia and was co-editor of Westerly from 1985-2009, which has published on Australian and Asian issues since 1956. He is currently Chair of the Literature Board of the Australia Council. Dennis is a poet who has written many poems about Australia and Asia (winner of the WA Premier’s Prize for Poetry in 2007), and he has published articles and books on Australia and Singapore-Malaysian and Indian literature and culture. He has taught undergraduate courses and supervised doctoral theses on Australian-Asian writing, and participates in activities in this field through the Westerly Centre, a research centre at UWA. He won a Carrick Institute Award (a national teaching award) in 2007, partly for teaching a new Doctor of Arts degree ‘Australian Literature into China’ in China. He has been an invited scholar to conferences and universities in China, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines. His Acts of Defiance: Selected Poems will be published by Salt Publishing (UK) this year.
