‘Fractions of an Intangible Whole': Philippine Social Realism in the Ateneo Art Gallery
La Trobe University Museum of Art
30 June – 31 July 2009
The exhibition draws from the strong collection of Philippine social realist works in the 1970s-1980s of the first museum of modern art in the Philippines, the Ateneo Art Gallery. The show looks at how historically significant works become animated with new meaning through the museum and its exhibits which include contemporary art sourced outside the collection.
Public Event:
Wednesday 22 July 2009 4pm
Clarissa Chikiamco, Curator: Fractions of an Intangible Whole - Philippine Social Realism Between Art, History and the Unfolding Present
Join guest curator Clarissa Chikiamco for an insight on the strong historical narrative of the country’s social and political conditions during the 70’s and 80’s. Chikiamco discusses the necessity of finding ways in which to animate the works with new meanings within a contemporary context rather than confining them to their historical associations. Central to this discussion will be the role of the museum.

Wednesday 22 July 2009 from 6 - 8pm
Guest Speaker: Raul V Hernandez, Consular General of the Philippines
